Christian Nicolay
2012

The separation between life and death, known and unknown is valued and dealt with in many ways from Western and Eastern cultures through the humans’ imagination and complex practices of burial ceremonies, rituals and superstition. People try to send wishes, thoughts, memories and love using daily objects from the real world to send to another world with the deceased after death.  In the Carry an object with you project, we keep developing our research with traditional funerary practices abroad and invite people to participate.

If you could take only one thing with you when you die what would it be?
All the participators are photographed in the nude holding the object they would take with them after death in front of their face. The identity is eliminated from the participant and makes the object become more important.  The photographs are projected onto a sculptural installation and accompanied by a sound composition.

The installation was display during the SCHMIEDE Art Festival in Hallien, Austria.

Portable Walls

port·a·ble walls
1, a temporary or nomadic shift serving to enclose, divide, protect or change ones identity (i.e.: your identity shifts depending on where you are). 2, To adapt to ones surroundings. 3, What is destroyed is reborn (i.e.: A wall is meant to set a barrier from one area to another, but making it portable means you have to set it up and take it down each time).
4, Fluctuating re-occurrences. 5, Paradigm shift. 6, A person who creates more than one identity, traces of digital footprints, profiles and usernames. 7, Cultural landscapes that become crisscrossed and blurred from globalization, shifting borders, war, geo-politics, digital revolution, travel, re-location, etc. 8, paying attention to the constant flux of rules, regulations, definitions, checks and changes on privacy laws and the ability to relearn what is learned.
